CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Three counties in the Charlotte region are under tornado warnings until 7:30 p.m.

Eastern Catawba County, southeastern Alexander County, and west-central Iredell County are affected by the warning issued by the National Weather Service just before 6:45 p.m. A severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near the towns of Newton and Maiden, moving northeast at 30 miles per hour.

In addition to the tornado, quarter-sized hail has been named as a possible hazard.

Today

Cloudy skies start the day with on and off light rain showers to begin the afternoon. The severe potential is in question only because of one factor… sunshine. This is the key storm fuel needed to produce anything noteworthy. Any place that gets some blue sky for an hour or two will have an elevated shot at a quick developing severe thunderstorm.

The main window of opportunity will be 3-8 p.m. so that is the time to be weather aware. There will also be occasional wind gusts over 30 mph on and off through the day that brought a few trees down early this morning and even knocked the power out to some.
