Firefighters who performed rescues after Florence need help

WALLACE, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina volunteer fire department which helped save more than 100 people after Hurricane Florence says it could use some help.
WITN-TV in Greenville reports the North East Volunteer Fire Department outside of Wallace in Duplin County had 5 feet of water inside its station due to Florence, and 23 of the 28 firefighters who work at the station suffered damage to their own homes. Of those, 19 homes were flooded.

The department also lost one truck.
Chief Kenneth Cavenaugh said walls at the fire station have already been torn out, and it will take about a year to get the fire station back to the way it was before the hurricane. For now, Cavenaugh said the fire station is serving as a distribution center for the area.
