Street flooding, canceled classes due to Texas coastal rain
GALVESTON, Texas (AP) — A tropical disturbance is bringing heavy rain to already saturated areas along the Texas Gulf Coast, resulting in street flooding and prompting some schools to cancel or cut short classes.
A weak tropical disturbance just off the South Texas Gulf Coast on Friday was predicted to bring 5 inches (12 centimeters) or more of rain to some areas.
In Galveston, officials reported up to 2 feet (0.6 meters) of water on some roadways. The island city has had more than 16 inches (40 centimeters) of rain through the first 13 days of September.
In Corpus Christi, the school district delayed classes for two hours. Neighboring districts in Aransas Pass and Kingsville canceled classes Friday.
In Brownsville, the school district planned to send students home early.
