The city of Port Aransas will close its beaches Saturday evening as Tropical Storm Beta nears the Texas coast.
Port Aransas Mayor Charles Bujan issued a proclamation that will close the city’s beaches at 8 p.m. Saturday until further notice to prepare for severe weather conditions generated by the tropical storm, the Port Aransas South Jetty reported.
At 3 p.m. Saturday, the National Weather Service Corpus Christi reported storm surge was evident on the sand dunes near Port Aransas and along beach access roads near Padre Island.
Corpus Christi area beach closures
Padre Island National Seashore also closed its roads to North Beach and South Beach by Saturday afternoon. Driving access to both beaches will be restored as soon as conditions allow, according to a news release sent by the national park service.
The city of Corpus Christi has implemented restrictions on vehicle access to Gulf beaches as Tropical Storm Beta approaches the coast. Road closures are effective immediately and will last until 8 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23.
If water has not receded, the restriction may be extended, according to the city’s news release.
The locations with restricted vehicle beach access are Access Roads 2, 3, 3, Newport, Zahn and Whitecap. Pedestrians are allowed, but officials say they are not encouraged due to dangerous beach conditions and rip currents.
Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation Beach Operation crews are noting large swells, trong rip currents and flooding in areas of Gulf beaches.
The closures are being coordinated with the Texas General Land Office.
