City to Begin Water Releases from Lake Corpus Christi Reservoir to Maintain Wesley Seale Dam Integrity and Minimize Flooding
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – City officials have been closely monitoring the water flow into Lake Corpus Christi & Choke Canyon reservoirs due to recent rains in the watershed. The river forecasts are predicting water in Lake Corpus Christi to exceed the capacity of the Wesley Seale Dam. Later today city officials will begin water releases on a limited basis.
The goals for the water releases are to maintain the integrity of the dam while keeping as much water as possible in Lake Corpus Christi reservoir and minimizing any downstream flooding of the Nueces River. The City and its partners work together to monitor incoming floodwaters using river gauges and other equipment to make responsible water release decisions.
Due to the combined capacity of our reservoirs approaching 50 percent, Interim City Manager Keith Selman has ordered the Stage 1 Mild Water Shortage Watch be lifted. Water restrictions are rescinded, effective immediately.
