WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) –

New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC), a level II trauma center hospital in Wilmington, is transferring some patients as Hurricane Florence is set to strike.

Patients are being transferred for their safety and to make sure there is enough staff working during the storm, said Carolyn Fisher, NHRMC spokesperson, in an email late Monday night.

“As the region’s primary medical provider and trauma center, New Hanover Regional Medical Center plans to offer care to our community throughout the storm,” said Fisher.

A total of 885 licensed beds are in the hospital. NHRMC’s team includes about 7,000 employees and 740 physicians, according to the hospital’s website.

The hospital is working to reduce the number of patients that will need care during the storm, said Fisher.

“That will mean working with the state to transfer some patients who can safely travel to other facilities,” said Fisher. “We will still have patients at NHRMC, but we are working to minimize that number.”
