Tropical Storm Cristobal forms in the Gulf

AUSTIN, Texas — The 2020 hurricane season is off to a busy start. Tropical Storm Cristobal officially formed in the southwestern Gulf on Tuesday, becoming the third named storm of the season. 

Following the previous two named storms – Arthur and Bertha – Cristobal is the earliest third named storm on record for the Atlantic basin. Hurricane season officially began on June 1st, and continues through the end of November.

Cristobal remains fairly unorganized as of early Tuesday afternoon, and is expected to meander around the Bay of Campeche for the next couple of days.

However, by this weekend Cristobal will likely begin moving to the north across the Gulf of Mexico. The latest track from the National Hurricane Center has a tropical storm with 65 mph winds over the northern Gulf by Sunday morning. 

It is too soon to forecast what specific impacts if any could be felt across the Lone Star state; however, Cristobal bears watching for the Gulf coast by this weekend.
