Hurricane Florence weakened to a Category 1 hurricane with maximum 90 mph winds late Thursday night as the still-dangerous storm battered the Carolina coast, bending trees and shooting frothy sea water over streets on the Outer Banks. Radar has shown a half-dozen tornadoes in eastern and southeastern North Carolina, the National Weather Service reported. Much of the Carolinas coast has been under a daylong tornado watch.
